Recap Day 1 – DIY Tips – Official.fm at SHARE Conference
April 8th, 2011 | events, share conference
We’re bringing daily recaps of the best industry expert Do-It-Yourself tips right here from SHARE Conference in Belgrade, Serbia. Here are the most valuable outtakes from day one.
Melissa Taylor is the founder of Tailored Communication, a firm that specializes in promoting electronic music. The key tips for artists she had in terms of DIY are these:
- Believe in what you’re doing. A career in music requires one hundred per cent commitment, because it’s not easy. It’s actually quite difficult if you want to make a living from your music.
- You should connect with people. Put your network together. Expand on what you have.
- Be ready to grow slowly. You should not expect everything to happen overnight. It does happen, but it’s very rare.
Toby Brundin runs Svetlana Industries, a label that focuses on releasing electronic music tracks on vinyl. Here is what Toby had to say in terms of his experience with the music business:
- His formula centered around five principles: Hype, Hope, Energy, Love and Intelligence. These are key components for being successful as an artist.
- He defined hype as a certain amount of media attention revolving around something.
- He encouraged artists to chat to people. Talk to a whole lot of people. They will talk to others and maybe some of them will be music bloggers or journalists – then they can create hype around you.
- He advised doing a lot of gigs consistently in order to build up a substantial audience behind your hype. He mentioned one of the DJs on his label does 50 gigs per year.
- Tools for creating hype: videos, memes, mixes, photos, tracks.
- For mixes he recommended getting your mixes in a place with listeners, with someone who already has an audience, like a music blog. Just posting and waiting for people to listen will usually not work very well.
- For tracks he recommended that if you’re going to offer a MP3 to music blogs to give away, don’t give them anything but your best. Basically, give away your good tunes, because you have to make a good first impression. Also, if you have 500 tracks or so, don’t give them all away at once. Be aware of people’s attention spans.
- Don’t be afraid to ask. Don’t be afraid to share your music and ask people to have a listen.
- Tell people to be honest. Be ready for their opinions to be brutal.
- Find the right people (i.e. promoters, bloggers from sites that you want to be on, etc.). Be confident and go talk to them.
- Likeability is a major factor in whether something happens for you or not. According to Toby, likeability was found to be the main factor in US presidential election winners.
We’ll be talking to Toby again today, so perhaps we’ll have more advice from Toby later.
That’s all for now. Tomorrow another recap. We’re also tweeting from the conference, follow us on Twitter (@officialfm).
